Ph.D. dissertation project on statistical text analysis and visualization. The goal: to discover otherwise hidden patterns in texts by automatic parsing, keyword extraction, relationship building and case-specific visualization of results. I dropped out of the PhD program in favor of founding a consulting company for startups and local SMEs.

  • 'Germany' in: Encyclopedia of Social Networks

    George A. Barnett (ed.)

This two-volume SAGE encyclopedia provides a thorough introduction to the wide-ranging, fast-developing field of social networking, a much-needed resource at a time when new social networks seem to spring up on the internet every day. Social networks, or groupings of individuals tied by one or more specific types of interests or interdependencies ranging from likes and dislikes, or disease transmission to the "old boy" network or overlapping circles of friends, have been in existence for much…

This two-volume SAGE encyclopedia provides a thorough introduction to the wide-ranging, fast-developing field of social networking, a much-needed resource at a time when new social networks seem to spring up on the internet every day. Social networks, or groupings of individuals tied by one or more specific types of interests or interdependencies ranging from likes and dislikes, or disease transmission to the "old boy" network or overlapping circles of friends, have been in existence for much longer than Facebook or Twitter; analysis of these networks emphasizes the relationships within the network.
This reference resource offers comprehensive coverage of the theory and research within the social sciences that has sprung from the analysis of such groupings, with accompanying definitions, measures, and research.

  • Computer-Based Content Analysis of Television Footage From Four Countries: Coding Technique and Intercoder Reliability Testing.

For the research conducted for the DFG-funded project "Automatic detection and classification of persons as Key Visual candidates," we extensively use quantitative content analysis to compare the visual depiction of heads of state, common people, athletes and audience in US and German TV annual reviews. Our sample comprises more than 44 hours of footage. Recently, we have extended the scope of our analysis to Chinese and Brazilian TV annual reviews. To facilitate and coordinate the analysis, we have developed "Kivi," a software that allows an efficient large-scale content analysis of video footage. Kivi is a web-based application that can be accessed by multiple coders and administrators at the same time. It allows the annotation of video segments and the marking of objects within still frames. Kivi integrates tools from the field of image processing that allow the automatic recognition of shot boundaries and faces. Moreover, the software features online reporting and a data export to the statistical software packages R and SPSS. We will show that computer-based video content analysis allows a precision that opens up new possibilities for researchers. The coding software Kivi is available for free under the GNU Public License. We will present our coding methodology and describe the measures we took to ensure a sufficient intercoder reliability within and across countries. We conducted five rounds of intercoder reliability testing. Our experiences suggest that coders should be regarded as active partners in the coding process. The feedback coders gave led to a re-formulation of questions, coding instructions, to a change of the layout of the questionnaire and ultimately to a boost in the reliability of the codings.

  • Using Automatic Face Recognition to Identify Presentation Patterns of Power and Hierarchy in U.S.-American and German TV Annual Reviews.

Conference: Third European Communications Conference (ECC2010)

We show how differences in power and hierarchy are reflected in the depictions of common people and heads of state in U.S.-American (ABC, CBS, NBC) and German (ARD) annual reviews on TV from 1999 to 2009. Thereby we identify typical framing and presentation patterns across two differing media cultures and journalistic traditions. The centrality of depiction and the constellation of actors on screen clearly mark differences in power and hierarchy.

On the methodological side, we use quantitative content analysis and automatic face recognition to identify actors, their number, their position relative to other actors and the size of their depiction and the length of the video sequence.
More than 44 hours of video footage have been analyzed with the help of 'Kivi', a computer-aided content analysis and video annotation tool developed at Jacobs University Bremen. The collaboration project between teams of media scholars and computer scientists, funded by the German Research Foundation DFG, demonstrates how toolsets from the computer sciences such as algorithm-based face recognition and automatic image analysis can contribute to new insights in the field of media research. Our research contributes to the formation of a theory on Key Visuals. Key Visuals are functional equivalents to keywords, mainly to headings in the print media. They condense the essences of image sequences to about 6 to 14 seconds and constitute major elements of the transnational visualization of public spheres and attention markets. Annual reviews on TV are suitable to identify Key Visuals because they select – and establish – the main news events of the year and re-broadcast news footage deemed the most important by TV news journalists and editorial staff.
